| ReNu MoistureLoc Alert
ReNu with MoistureLoc is a popular contact lens solution used by millions of Americans, but Bausch & Lomb has agreed to stop shipping the product because its use has been linked to a severe fungal eye infection and/or loss of vision.
The ReNu with MoistureLoc brand of contact lens solution is being investigated by both the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In a preliminary public health notification dated April 10, 2006, the Food and Drug Administration issued a warning related to a number of reports in the United States of a rare but serious fungus infection of the eye in soft contact lens wearers – fungal keratitis, caused by the Fusarium fungus, which may cause vision loss requiring corneal transplants.
The CDC has received reports of more than 100 cases of suspected fungal keratitis in 20 different states. The majority of these case patients have yet to be interviewed, but complete data was available for 30 of the case patients as of April 10, 2006 – the day Bausch & Lomb announced suspension of shipments of ReNu. Preliminary information obtained by the CDC from patient interviews indicates that 26 of these patients remembered which products they used, and that all 26 reported using a Bausch & Lomb ReNu brand contact lens solution in the month prior to the onset of infection. Patients reported using a variety of different ReNu types from multiple different product lots.

As a nationally recognized pharmaceutical liability law firm, we represent consumers nationwide who have been victimized by defective pharmaceutical drugs and over-the-counter products, including ReNu with MoistureLoc.
While the CDC and FDA investigations are still ongoing, clusters of the disease were reported among contact lens wearers in Asia beginning in February 2006 that were also traced to Bausch & Lomb ReNu contact lens solution. Bausch & Lomb is voluntarily suspending shipment of the ReNu Moisture Loc product while the investigation continues into the cause of these infections. Soft contact lens users who have existing supplies of ReNu Moisture Loc should use the product with caution and report any signs and symptoms of eye infection to their doctors.
Many stores, such as Walgreen’s, CVS and Wal-mart have pulled ReNu with MoistureLoc Solution from shelves because of the contamination risk. Bausch & Lomb CEO Ron Zarrella explained in a letter on the company's website that the solution hasn't been proven to cause the infection – it is only associated with it.
