Alert : New Study
shows that Trasylol (aprotinin injection)
doubles the risk of kidney failure and stroke in
heart surgery patients. Approved in the U.S. in 1993, the drug is
given to about a quarter of the one million people world-wide who
undergo heart bypass surgery each year, the drug study estimates.
Trasylol is widely given to cardiac surgery patients to prevent
excessive blood loss. In a recent article published in the New
England Journal of Medicine, study results indicated Trasylol
doubled the risk of kidney failure and stroke
and also raised the chance of heart failure or heart attack by
55 percent.
Over the last several years, Bayer pharmaceuticals has seen a steady
growth in the sales of Trasylol. Bayer said in December the drug had
sales potential of $615 million dollars, which would make it one of
the top products of its pharmaceuticals unit.
The study also showed that cheaper alternatives to Trasylol were
just as effective in limiting blood loss but didn't cause any of the
dangerous side effects (heart attack, stroke, kidney failure)
associated with the more expensive brand medication. While Bayer
Healthcare insists the drug is safe, the FDA released a statement
calling the new study a "complicated analysis based on a large
observational database" and said the agency is working to gather all
available information and to evaluate the drug's safety.
