Vioxx
Recall : Drugmaker
Merck & Co. pulled its best-selling arthritis drug Vioxx
off the market on September 30, 2004, based on drug trial data
indicating Vioxx increases the risk of
heart attack and stroke among users.
The Vioxx drug trial, called the APPROVe [Adenomatous Polyp
Prevention on VIOXX] trial, compared Vioxx to a placebo
(sugar-pill). The purpose of the trial was to see if 25
milligrams of Vioxx was effective in preventing the recurrence
of colon polyps. The trial was stopped early because there was
an increased risk for serious cardiovascular events,
such as heart attacks and strokes. The increased risk
was first observed after 18 months of continuous treatment in
patients taking Vioxx. The patients taking the placebo did not
indicate any increased risks.
